STFC ALTERNATIVE PROVISION

Information for Schools

Individualised placements, purposeful learning and support for each pupil’s next steps.

We offer individualised alternative provision placements designed around the needs, interests, abilities and aspirations of each young person.

Our provision gives pupils valuable time away from the pressures of a mainstream school setting, providing an opportunity to reset, rebuild confidence and experience education in a different and more personalised way.

We aim to create a calm, nurturing and enabling environment where pupils of all abilities feel safe, supported and able to thrive.

Our staff take a trauma-informed approach, recognising that a young person's experiences can have a significant impact on their emotional wellbeing, behaviour and ability to engage with learning.

We take time to understand each individual pupil and work to build trusted, positive and progressive relationships based on consistency, encouragement and mutual respect.

We believe that strong relationships provide the foundation for progress. By creating an environment in which pupils feel understood, valued and supported, we can help them develop the confidence to take positive steps forward, both personally and academically.

Individualised learning

We recognise that every pupil is different. Placements can therefore be tailored to suit individual needs, with learning centred around activities that pupils enjoy and can engage with successfully.

Practical activities such as cooking, football and other interest-led opportunities are used to build confidence, encourage participation and develop valuable life and employability skills.

We believe that positive experiences of education are essential. Pupils are given opportunities to make choices, explore their strengths and experience success in areas that they genuinely enjoy.

These successes can help develop self-esteem, motivation and resilience and can provide a platform for wider engagement with learning.

Functional Skills and progression

Alongside practical and positive learning experiences, pupils can be supported to work towards Functional Skills qualifications and examinations in English and maths up to Level 2.

Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths are recognised qualifications at the same qualification level as GCSE grades 4–9 (previously A*–C). They can support progression to further study, training and employment. Entry requirements vary, so acceptance should be checked with the relevant college, training provider or employer.

These qualifications can provide pupils with valuable evidence of achievement in English and maths and can support their progression towards college, further education, training, apprenticeships and future employment.

Our approach enables academic learning to sit alongside practical experiences and personal development. For some pupils, this alternative way of learning can make academic achievement feel more accessible, relevant and purposeful.

A nurturing and enabling environment

Our nurturing staff work closely with each pupil, providing encouragement, consistency and appropriate challenge.

We focus on the whole young person, creating an enabling environment in which pupils of all abilities are given opportunities to develop, achieve and thrive.

Transport

We understand that transport can sometimes be a barrier when accessing alternative provision.

Transport can be arranged through the provision where required, helping to make placements more accessible and straightforward for pupils, families and referring schools.

Transport needs can be discussed as part of the referral and placement process so that suitable arrangements can be considered around the individual pupil.

Working with schools

We work in partnership with schools to understand the needs of individual pupils and develop placements that provide the appropriate balance of support, challenge, opportunity and academic progression.

Our aim is to provide young people with a positive and purposeful experience of education by helping them recognise their strengths, experience success, build trusted relationships and develop the confidence, qualifications and skills they need to take their next steps.
